CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) Information
All compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are not the same – they’re unique. Here are some things to consider when purchasing and installing CFLs in your home:
- Always read product packaging carefully to ensure that CFLs are being used in the correct fixtures.
- Some fixtures in the home – including tri-lights, dimmer switches and outdoor fixtures – may require specific CFLs. Ensure you are purchasing CFLs that are labelled for those applications.
- Some manufacturers do not recommend installing CFLs in fixtures that are both enclosed and recessed. In this case, heat from the ballast may cause the light bulb to fail prematurely.
- Fixtures with a photocell (motion sensor or light sensor) may cause interference and lead to problems with bulb performance.
- When using a CFL outdoors, it should be placed in an enclosed fixture. Enclosed fixtures will protect the bulb from the elements, such as rain, snow and hail.
- For maximum life, use CFLs in areas where the lights are left on for longer periods. Frequent switching on and off (on for less than 30 minutes) may decrease the life of the bulb.
